About Microneedling

When home skin products are just not effective anymore but you are not ready for surgery, learn more about nonsurgical treatments to rejuvenate the skin like microneedling. Board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Deanah Jibril is pleased to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at her office in Plano, TX with the SkinPen. Microneedling uses the power of fine-gauge needles to safely create micro-injuries in your facial skin areas. The micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that contribute to the appearance and health of your skin. Easily combined with other skin treatments (like vitamin-infused serums), microneedling can help reduce scars, stretch marks, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Willowbend Med Spa to hear more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for you.

Ideal Candidates

You may benefit from microneedling if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like a decrease in elasticity or rough skin texture. Microneedling treatments can also minimize the appearance of pores, stretch marks, and scars. You must be willing to wait a while before seeing improvements from your microneedling treatment since the collagen and elastin will need some time to replenish the skin, but you will develop natural-looking results and gain healthier overall skin.

Procedure Technique

A microneedling treatment is completed in a private treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes with topical anesthesia if preferred, but patients generally report mild or no discomfort. The area being treated will be cleansed before the SkinPen handpiece is passed evenly over your skin.

Upon completion, a moisturizer will be massaged in along with UV protection since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.

What to Expect

After your microneedling session, you may experience mild swelling and redness for about a day, but this should fade naturally. It may take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your complexion. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for ideal results and long-lasting skin health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does microneedling cost?
You microneedling costs will vary depending on what is in your plan. During your consultation, Dr. Jibril will analyze your skin and then develop your custom plan. She will then explain your costs and the procedure. Willowbend Med Spa often offers specials on treatment packages, so ask about current deals during your consultation.

What exactly is microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment to rejuvenate your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps keep your skin supple, smooth, and tight. Eventually, your stores of collagen will be depleted, and your skin becomes less elastic and thin. Microneedling makes small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries bolster collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, your skin looks firmer, brighter, and healthier.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Typically, patients receive 3 – 6 sessions to get their best results. However, the number of treatments you need will depend on your skin's condition and your goals. Microneedling can be performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your consultation, Dr. Jibril can estimate how many treatments you will need based on your skin and goals. Once you have reached your goal, Dr. Jibril recommends getting maintenance treatments about twice a year.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
In general, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are rarely side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin, including the face, arms, neck, chest, and legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have used Accutane recently, as well as if you have an open wound, herpes simplex, or active skin infection. In addition, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation treatments.
